Way of the Sword

Tai Kwun, Hong Kong

2021

Narrative development, exhibition design, exhibition graphics design, project management

Curated by Hing Chao and Roberto Gotti and with multi-media installations by Jeffrey Shaw, this exhibition presents Chinese and Italian warrior and sword traditions from the Classical era through to the Early Modern age. The exhibition design accommodated over 200 exhibits including historic swords and polearms,  sixteenth-century martial art manuscripts and books, artifacts related to the martial cultures of China and Italy and several immersive and interactive experiences in a 2 story exhibition space with abundant natural light.

The exhibition design contrasts the historic development of Chinese and Italian warrior traditions, represenetd by blue and red colored displays. A long centrally placed double sided vitrine shows the development of the sword typologies in both traditions.
The heritage status of the location required all exhibition furniture to be free-standing.
